History of Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar

A Glorious Tradition of Devotion, Art and Cultural Heritage

Introduction

Chandannagar, situated in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, is a historic city renowned for its French colonial heritage, architectural beauty, artistic excellence and, above all, its magnificent Jagadhatri Puja celebrations.

Located on the western bank of the River Hooghly, Chandannagar has developed a distinctive cultural identity over the centuries. Jagadhatri Puja is not merely a religious festival here; it represents the devotion, emotions, artistic creativity and social harmony of the people of the city.

The Ancient Origins of Jagadhatri Puja

The word Jagadhatri means “the Bearer or Sustainer of the Universe.” Goddess Jagadhatri is a revered form of the Divine Mother in Hindu tradition and is closely associated with Goddess Durga.

The Goddess is traditionally depicted with four arms, holding a conch, discus, bow and arrow. She is seated upon a lion, which is shown standing over the elephant-shaped demon Karindrasura, symbolising the triumph of divine power over arrogance and evil.

Although the worship of Goddess Jagadhatri has a long history in Bengal, the precise year in which the tradition began in Chandannagar remains a subject of historical discussion. No universally accepted documentary evidence establishes an exact starting date.

The Beginning of Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar

According to a widely circulated historical tradition, Jagadhatri Puja was worshipped at the residence of Dewan Indranarayan Chaudhuri, an influential figure associated with Chandannagar during the period of French rule.

Various historical accounts also mention his connections with Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy of Nadia, who is traditionally associated with the popularisation of Jagadhatri worship in Bengal.

Some local historical accounts and oral traditions suggest that the worship of Goddess Jagadhatri in Chandannagar may have begun as early as the mid-eighteenth century or earlier. However, accounts differ regarding the precise chronology.

It is therefore more accurate to recognise that a well-established tradition of Jagadhatri worship developed in Chandannagar during the eighteenth century, while acknowledging that its exact beginnings remain open to historical investigation.

French Rule and Chandannagar’s Cultural Heritage

Chandannagar remained under French rule for a significant period of its history. Despite the political and administrative conditions of the colonial era, the Bengali community continued to preserve and celebrate its religious beliefs, customs and cultural traditions.

Jagadhatri Puja gradually became one of the most prominent expressions of this heritage.

Over time, the participation of traditional family households, neighbourhood communities and Sarbojanin Puja committees helped expand the festival. What was once associated with household worship gradually developed into a major public celebration, becoming an integral part of Chandannagar’s social and cultural life.

The Special Attractions of Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar

1. Magnificent Idols and Traditional Artistry

The idols of Goddess Jagadhatri in Chandannagar are renowned for their traditional appearance, intricate ornaments, decorative craftsmanship and elaborate sholar kaaj—artwork made from the soft, lightweight material known as shola.

The dedication and skill of local clay artists and artisans transform the making of the Goddess’s idol into an extraordinary expression of Bengal’s artistic heritage.

2. World-Famous Illuminations

One of the greatest attractions of Chandannagar’s Jagadhatri Puja is its spectacular illumination.

Artisans create colourful decorative lighting, animated light displays and innovative visual presentations using both traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.

These remarkable creations have earned Chandannagar widespread recognition for its lighting artistry and have become an essential part of the city’s festive identity.

3. Grand Processions and Immersion Celebrations

The immersion procession is one of the most anticipated events of Chandannagar’s Jagadhatri Puja.

During the celebrations, the city’s streets come alive with beautifully decorated idols, elaborate illuminations, traditional musical performances and large gatherings of devotees and visitors.

The procession offers a spectacular conclusion to the festivities and reflects the enthusiasm, collective participation and cultural pride of the people of Chandannagar.

4. Community Participation and Social Harmony

Jagadhatri Puja strengthens the bonds of cooperation, unity and social harmony among the people of Chandannagar.

People of different ages and backgrounds come together to organise the celebrations. Artists, artisans, volunteers, organisers and local residents all contribute to making the festival successful.

This spirit of collective participation is one of the most valuable aspects of the tradition.

From Religious Worship to a Cultural Heritage

Today, Chandannagar’s Jagadhatri Puja has grown far beyond the boundaries of a local religious celebration. Every year, visitors from different parts of India and beyond come to experience its magnificent idols, spectacular illuminations and grand immersion processions.

The festival also creates opportunities for local artists, craftsmen, traders and small businesses, contributing to the local economy and preserving traditional skills.

It demonstrates how religious devotion, artistic excellence, cultural identity and community participation can together shape the unique character of a city.

The Heritage of Bagbazar Sarbojanin Jagadhatri Puja Committee

The various Puja committees of Chandannagar play an important role in preserving and carrying forward the city’s rich Jagadhatri Puja tradition.

Through their continued efforts, religious rituals, cultural activities, community participation and social initiatives remain an integral part of the celebrations.

Bagbazar Sarbojanin Jagadhatri Puja Committee honours this glorious heritage by continuing the worship of Goddess Jagadhatri and encouraging community involvement, cultural preservation and social responsibility.

For the committee, Jagadhatri Puja is more than an annual religious celebration. It is a living legacy of faith, culture, unity and collective responsibility, passed down from one generation to the next.

The committee remains committed to preserving these values and ensuring that the spirit of the festival continues to inspire future generations.

Conclusion

Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar represents a remarkable blend of history, devotion, artistic excellence and social harmony.

Although certain aspects of the festival’s early history, particularly its exact year of origin, remain subjects of historical discussion, its cultural significance and enduring influence on the lives of the people are undeniable.

May the blessings of Maa Jagadhatri enrich this glorious tradition for generations to come. May the light of devotion, unity, humanity and harmony illuminate every heart.

Jai Maa Jagadhatri!
